Kansas 5A State Championships
The Golden Bears locked up their first ever event state championship this past weekend at the Kansas 5A Swimming and Diving State Championships. Gabe Pena, Thomas Xiong, Ethan Harrity, and Ashton Chowning captured the state title in the 200 freestyle relay. Their winning time in that event set a new Kansas 5A record (1:29.21), breaking the 2015 record set by Wichita Heights.
Pena, swimming in his final high school meet, finished 4th in the 50 free, 7th in the 100 fly, and was named to the All-State 2nd team. Chowning, also a senior, finished 8th in the 50 free and 16th in the 100 free.
200 free relay: 1st place – New state and school record – 1:29.21 (Pena, Xiong, Harrity, Chowning)
200 medley relay: 5th place – New school record – 1:41.21 (Pena, Clay, Harrity, Chowning)
Pena: 4th place 50 free and 7th place 100 fly
Chowning: 8th place 50 free and 16th place 100 free
Clay: 14th place 100 breast
